The 2021 NHL Season is Officially Underway!
NEW YORK, NY. (Fish Sports) - Today, January 13th, 2021, marked the start of the 2021 National Hockey League season. The NHL season typically starts in October, but with Covid-19 present, and the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs finishing up late, the league decided to have a shortened season rather than neglecting the season completely.
The first matchup of the season began in Philadelphia, where the Pittsburgh Penguins faced-off with the Philadelphia Flyers in the new, re-designed MassMutual East Division. The Flyers played strong throughout, scoring three goals in the Third Period to win the game 6 to 3 over the Pens.
We then travel to Toronto, Canada where the Montreal Canadiens visited the Toronto Maple Leafs in the new, all-Canadian Scotia North Division. The Maple Leafs took the game in overtime, winning 5 to 4. It was Defenseman Morgan Rielly scoring the game-winning-goal.
Up next is the 2020 Stanley Cup Champions, Tampa Bay Lightning, facing the visiting Chicago Blackhawks in the new Discover Central Division. Tampa played to their strengths winning 5-1 over Chicago, showcasing their powerful offense and strong defensive play that was so present in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
We then head back to the all-Canadian Division, where we had the Vancouver Canucks visiting the Edmonton Oilers. The Canucks kept adding to their lead and did not let the Oilers back into the game, winning 5 to 3. Both teams look to make strong playoff pushes this year.
In the final game of the night, in the newly designed Honda West Division, we had the St. Louis Blues visiting our Colorado Avalanche. The Avs scored first with Andre Burakovsky's Power-Play Goal but could not put the puck past St. Louis Goaltender, Jordan Binnington. The Avs look for redemption tomorrow night against the Blues, once again at Ball Center in Denver. #GoAvsGo!
