January 17th, 2021 NHL Recap

NEW YORK, NY. (Fish Sports) - January 17th, 2021, was another great day for hockey, marking the return of Sunday Afternoon hockey. We had two entertaining games today with a shoot-out thrown into the mix. The Dallas Stars have been unable to play their first game of the season so far due to COVID-19 issues.

To start, we head out to Sunrise, Florida where the Chicago Blackhawks took on the Florida Panthers. The Panthers win their season opener 5 to 2. Chicago falls to 0 and 3 to start the season, allowing 5 goals in each of their first 3 games. They currently sit with a -10 point differential to start the year. Chicago's Alex DeBrincat had a goal on the day, along with Chicago Defenseman, Connor Murphy scoring one. Florida had five different scorers in the game, with Defenseman Keith Yandle scoring a goal. 26-year-old Panthers goalie, Chris Driedger made 24 saves with 26 shots against. He posted a .923 save percentage to win his first game of the year.

Heading out to Pittsburgh, the Washington Capitals faced the Pittsburgh Penguins. A thriller of a game, this one ended up in a shootout. The Pens received their first 2 points of the season and start 1 and 2 while the Caps are at the top of the league at 2-0-1 to start. The depth of the Capitals gives them a true advantage to start the year. The 3rd star of the game went to Alex Ovechkin who had a goal and an assist, he would have had a second goal but the puck went off both posts and stayed out of the cage. The 2nd star of the game went to Pens Defenseman, Marcus Pettersson who had a goal on the day. The first star of the game went to Pens Forward, Jake Guentzel who had an assist on the day.
